The Tatum Greenblatt Quintet delivered an unforgettable evening of jazz at SMALLS in New York on February 20, 2025. From the moment the band took the stage at 7:30 PM, it was clear that the audience was in for a treat. The quintet, led by the phenomenal trumpeter Tatum Greenblatt, showcased a masterful blend of technical prowess, emotional depth, and infectious energy that left the crowd buzzing long after the final note.
Effortlessly performance
Tatum Greenblatt was nothing short of spectacular. His trumpet playing was a masterclass in musicality and control. Greenblatt’s ability to effortlessly navigate all registers of his instrument, from the sultry lows to the soaring highs, was awe-inspiring. His phrasing was both inventive and lyrical, and his energy on stage was palpable. Whether he was leading the charge with fiery solos or laying back to support his bandmates, Greenblatt’s presence was magnetic.
John Ellis, on tenor sax and bass clarinet, was another standout of the evening. A true legend of the New York jazz scene, Ellis brought his signature blend of soulful expression and technical brilliance to the performance. His tenor saxophone sound was rich and commanding, with a tone that seemed to fill every corner of the room. His bass clarinet work added a unique texture to the ensemble, showcasing his versatility and deep musicality.
The rhythm section was the backbone of the group, providing a rock-solid foundation and driving the music forward with impeccable precision. Boris Kozlov on bass was superb, playing “in the pocket” with a groove that was both deep and infectious. His ability to lock in with drummer Isiah Bravo created a rhythmic synergy that was irresistible. Kozlov’s solos were tasteful and melodic, demonstrating his mastery of the instrument.
Speaking of Caelan Cardello and Isiah Bravo, both a young force on the NYC Jazz scene, they proved to be a rising stars in the jazz world, and their contributions were a part of the quintet’s set.



The Music Reimagined
The setlist was a mix of original compositions and reimagined standards, each one delivered with passion and precision. The band’s chemistry was evident in every note, with each member listening and responding to one another in real-time.
