Milton +esperanza, released on August 9, 2023 via Concord Records, is the long-awaited collaboration between Brazilian music legend Milton Nascimento and jazz virtuoso esperanza spalding. The album is a heartfelt culmination of Spalding’s lifelong admiration for Nascimento, whose music she first discovered as a student at Berklee College of Music. Inspired by his 1975 album Native Dancer, Spalding dreamed of one day creating music with him.

The project features a mix of reimagined classics from Nascimento’s catalog, original compositions by spalding, and covers of songs by artists like The Beatles and Michael Jackson. Recorded primarily in Nascimento’s Rio de Janeiro home, the album captures the duo’s creative synergy and mutual respect. Tracks like “Cais” and “Outubro” highlight Nascimento’s enduring vocal power, while Spalding’s arrangements and bass playing add fresh depth. The album also includes collaborations with artists like Paul Simon, Dianne Reeves, and Lianne La Havas.
