Can art change the world? Can music spark revolution? These timeless questions echoed through the courtyard of Palazzo Morpurgo during a powerful performance by Italian vocalists Elisabetta Antonini and Alessandro Contini \u2014 part of this year\u2019s Udin&Jazz Festival 2025<\/a>. With their latest project, (R)EVOLUTION<\/a><\/em>, the duo explored the transformative power of art as resistance, paying homage to cultural revolutionaries like Fela Kuti, Pina Bausch, Sebasti\u00e3o Salgado, Dino Buzzati, Charles Bukowski, and David Sylvian.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joined by Alessandro Gwis (piano, electronics), Michele Rabbia (drums, percussion, electronics), and special guest Nils Petter Molv\u00e6r \u2014 the Norwegian trumpet icon of future jazz \u2014 the ensemble delivered a performance that fused ambient textures, improvisation, electronics, and lyrical narratives into one immersive experience.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sound as Resistance<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The concert opened with a projected video featuring images of the artists that inspired (R)EVOLUTION<\/em>, closing with the statement: Art is revolution<\/em>. From the first notes, the tone was set \u2014 Molv\u00e6r introduced his signature trumpet sound as Rabbia layered subtle percussion, ushering in a journey through sonic homage and creative resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The group\u2019s integration of electronics was especially notable. While some elements were pre-programmed, much of the electronic texture was crafted live in real time \u2014 looped, processed, and manipulated to serve the musical narrative. This live manipulation added depth and spontaneity throughout the evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voices as Instruments<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Contini opened the first piece, Gemini<\/em> \u2014 also the album\u2019s opener \u2014 by looping his voice to create a drone-like foundation. Molv\u00e6r responded with minimalist, spacious phrasing, while Antonini layered wordless vocalizations. Rabbia and Gwis gradually built a groove until it collapsed into a quiet vocal harmony between Antonini and Contini. This seamless blend of improvisation, poetry, and electronic texture was a throughline for the performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sebastiao<\/em>, dedicated to Brazilian photographer Sebasti\u00e3o Salgado, began with a groove made from looped breath sounds. The lyrics, penned by British writer Michael Rosen, wove naturally into the soundscape, enhanced by Molv\u00e6r\u2019s ability to find space without crowding the atmosphere. Rabbia\u2019s dynamic drumming and Gwis\u2019 low-end piano voicings grounded the piece, allowing the vocals to float freely. The line \u201cthe elegance of life\u201d looped in canon \u2014 a hypnotic, mantra-like moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Antonini gave a brief introduction to (R)EVOLUTION)<\/em>, they moved into For Fela<\/em>, a tribute to the father of Afrobeat and political activismt. Gwis opened with a swirling analog synth line, followed by Antonini\u2019s harmonized vocalizations that led into a groove built around a Rhodes riff. The vocals, sung in clear harmony, carried Fela\u2019s spirit with clarity and intent. Gwis added a concise piano and Rhodes solo over an Afrobeat-inspired beat, supported by Rabbia\u2019s layered percussion. The piece closed with Fela Kuti\u2019s voice resonating through the courtyard: \u201cMusic is for revolution.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between Poetry and Improvisation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A cover of David Sylvian\u2019s Nostalgia<\/em> followed, with Molv\u00e6r\u2019s octave-processed trumpet answering Antonini and Contini\u2019s interlocking vocals. Rabbia added bell-like sounds and then transitioned to brushes for a trumpet solo that filled the quiet beauty of the historic venue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In I Now Recall<\/em>, with lyrics by Rosen and Antonini on lead vocals, Gwis delivered a melodic piano solo supported by Rabbia\u2019s crisp and creative percussion. The piece balanced lyricism and rhythm, again relying on vocal and instrumental interplay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The haunting adaptation of Charles Bukowski\u2019s Bluebird<\/em> was introduced by Molv\u00e6r\u2019s cinematic solo trumpet introduction, setting a brooding tone. The poem was first recited in Bukowski\u2019s own voice before the group transitioned into a musical setting of Rosen\u2019s adaptation. Antonini\u2019s processed vocal solo sounded almost like a synth \u2014 another moment where voice and technology blurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suite for Pina Bausch<\/em> brought a welcome lift in tempo, driven by Rabbia\u2019s precision cymbal work. Antonini and Contini exchanged verses while Molv\u00e6r delivered yet another stunning solo, capturing the choreographic pulse of Bausch\u2019s movement. The track ended with a drum solo over a percussive vocal loop \u2014 an energizing close to the main set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cI Am Not Afraid of Not Being Afraid\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The evening concluded with Damned Old Moon<\/em> \u2014 possibly another nod to Bukowski \u2014 and Paradox<\/em>, the only piece with lyrics by Antonini herself. Anchored by a four-on-the-floor pulse and thick electronics, the repeated line \u201cI am not afraid of not being afraid\u201d<\/em> brought the concept of (R)EVOLUTION<\/em> full circle. Each artist they had honored throughout the concert \u2014 from Bukowski to Bausch \u2014 embodied this fearless commitment to change through creativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antonini and Contini\u2019s (R)EVOLUTION<\/em> was a bold and thoughtful meditation on the role of art as activism. It offered an evening rich with improvisation, sonic layering, and conceptual clarity \u2014 a performance that stretched beyond genre while honoring the structures of jazz, ambient, and experimental music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once again, Udin&Jazz proved itself unafraid to include genre-defying projects in its programming. And the full house at Corte di Palazzo Morpurgo confirmed that there\u2019s an audience ready to follow them on that journey. With Generations<\/strong> as this year\u2019s festival theme, the evening felt like a meeting point of past and future, where fearless sound met fearless vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
