June Yun: Enlightenment – Solid Waves

Jazz Ars All Stars
at Kavarna Cukrarna | February 9, 2025
On Friday, February 9, 2025, Kavarna Cukrarna in Ljubljana, Slovenia, hosted an exceptional musical event as part of the Jazz Ars All Stars series, where South Korean singer and composer June Yun presented her project Enlightenment – Solid Waves. She was joined by top-tier musicians: vibraphonist Vid Jamnik, pianist Marko Črnčec, bassist Ben Tiberio, and drummer Kristijan Krajnčan.
From the very first notes, it was clear that this was a thoughtfully crafted fusion of jazz, improvisation, and subtle vocal lyricism. June Yun, with her penetrating voice, created a mystical atmosphere that oscillated between gentle contemplation and intense emotional outbursts. Her interpretation was technically flawless yet entirely organic—every phrase carried a story, every tone was infused with expression.
However, what particularly captivated me was the vibraphonist Vid Jamnik. His playing was dynamic, full of finesse and refined melodies that effortlessly intertwined with Črnčec’s piano harmonies and the rhythmic foundation laid by Krajnčan and Tiberio. His improvisation was not only technically impeccable but also expressively rich—at times soft and dreamy, at others sharp and rhythmically daring.
The ensemble functioned as a harmonious whole, where it wasn’t just about individual virtuosic contributions but rather the subtle communication between the musicians. The sound was airy yet intense, with each instrumentalist contributing to the collective vision of the project.
The Enlightenment – Solid Waves concert was not just another jazz evening but a true musical meditation. The energy that June Yun and Vid Jamnik brought to the stage left a strong impression and confirmed that they are artists with an exceptional sense of musical storytelling.
